Mitsui OSK Lines has increased its investment in Twelve Benefit by injecting an additional $83 million, signaling a strengthened dedication to decarbonising the shipping sector. The California-based Twelve Benefit specializes in carbon transformation technology that converts carbon dioxide into sustainable aviation fuel and marine fuel, known as E-Jet and E-Marine respectively. These drop-in fuels boast up to 90% lower lifecycle emissions compared to traditional fossil-based fuels. Through partnerships with companies like Virgin Voyages, Alaska Airlines, Microsoft, and International Airlines Group, Twelve Benefit is gaining traction in the aviation and marine industries. Mitsui OSK Lines is also involved in the development of e-fuels, which are produced from hydrogen and carbon monoxide using renewable electricity, carbon dioxide, and water. The company has recently invested in HIF Global, a project focused on producing and transporting synthetic fuels. Furthermore, MOL is actively working on establishing an e-fuels supply chain alongside exploring the implementation of carbon capture technologies to achieve its decarbonisation objectives. This continued investment and focus on sustainable solutions underscore MOL's positive sentiment towards decarbonisation and its efforts to drive innovation in the shipping industry.
