The Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR) has partnered with zepp.solutions to work on a groundbreaking project aimed at developing a new fuel cell system for liquid hydrogen-powered flights. The collaboration will focus on fitting NLR's all-electric aircraft unit, the Pipistrel Velis Electro, with a hydrogen powertrain, with the first demonstration flight scheduled for 2026. This initiative is part of NLR's 'Climate Neutral Aviation' program, which targets achieving a climate-neutral aviation sector by 2050. The partnership with zepp.solutions will not only demonstrate the potential of hydrogen in aviation but also provide valuable insights into integrating hydrogen technology into aircraft and ensuring airworthiness and safety. Arjen Kloosterman, NLR Project Leader, highlights the importance of this project in gaining knowledge and experience in hydrogen technology integration for manned aviation.
