The BusinessNZ Energy Council (BEC) has expressed its support for the Government's low-emission hydrogen plan, recognizing the transformative potential of clean hydrogen within the wider energy system. Executive Director Tina Schirr highlighted the versatility and cleanliness of hydrogen as an energy carrier, emphasizing its role in enabling cleaner fuels in various sectors like aviation, shipping, heavy transport, and industry. Additionally, the plan aims to bolster a clean hydrogen-based economy that can have a significant impact on energy storage, promote further development of renewable generation projects, and support resilient and sustainable energy infrastructure. Not only does clean hydrogen offer domestic benefits, but it also opens up substantial export opportunities for New Zealand by trading green products derived from hydrogen on the international stage. The Government's vision aligns closely with the work BEC has been doing under the World Energy Council, focusing on hydrogen's role in the energy transition and the potential for global trade flows of hydrogen and its derivatives. The action plan further aims to reduce regulatory barriers and attract international investment to realize the vision of a thriving clean hydrogen economy in New Zealand.
