NextChem (Maire) Awarded Licensing for Innovative SAF Plant in Indonesia
Key Ideas
  • NEXTCHEM awarded licensing and process design package for a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) plant in Indonesia, producing 60,000 tonnes per year entirely from domestic feedstock.
  • Utilizes proprietary NX PTU™ and NX SAF™ BIO technologies to produce ultra-low carbon SAF, reducing aviation emissions by up to 95% compared to fossil fuels.
  • Demonstrates economic sustainability of small-scale plants, using palm oil mill effluent (POME) and certified used cooking oil as feedstock, contributing to 5% of Jakarta airport's jet fuel demand.
  • Alessandro Bernini, CEO of MAIRE, emphasizes the importance of deploying innovative solutions for decarbonizing high-impact sectors like aviation.
NEXTCHEM, a part of MAIRE, has been awarded the licensing and process design package for a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) plant in Sei Mangkei, Indonesia. The plant, expected to produce 60,000 tonnes per year of SAF entirely from domestic feedstock, will utilize proprietary NX PTU™ and NX SAF™ BIO technologies. These technologies enable the production of ultra-low carbon SAF, reducing aviation emissions significantly. The feedstock for the plant includes palm oil mill effluent and certified used cooking oil, showcasing the economic sustainability of small-scale plants. This project, optimized for local feedstock availability, is a significant step towards decarbonizing aviation in Indonesia. The SAF production process involves a pretreatment process for second-generation oleaginous feedstocks using NX PTU™ technology. The refined feedstock is then converted into SAF using hydrogen through the NX SAF™ BIO technology. This innovative process allows for the reduction of aviation emissions by up to 95% compared to traditional fossil fuels. The SAF plant is strategically located to fit feedstock logistics in Indonesia and could potentially account for 5% of the jet fuel demand of the Jakarta international airport. Alessandro Bernini, the CEO of MAIRE, underlines the importance of innovative and integrated technological solutions for decarbonizing high-impact sectors like aviation. The success of this project highlights the competences and determination of MAIRE in deploying sustainable solutions that can be adapted to various contexts and needs. Overall, this initiative represents a significant milestone in the advancement of sustainable aviation fuel production and reducing carbon emissions in the aviation sector.
