OMV Petrom announced the transformation of the Petrobrazi refinery into the first major producer of sustainable fuels in Southeast Europe. With EUR 750 million earmarked for investments in the facility, the 90-year-old refinery is set for a significant change, with a total of EUR 2 billion planned by 2030. The company aims to reduce the refinery's carbon emissions by 15% from the 2019 level, part of which will come from the production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) through two green hydrogen units. The investment will allow the production of 250,000 tons of sustainable fuels annually by 2028, contributing to the company's goal of decarbonizing transport in Romania. The EUR 560 million investment in the SAF/HVO system includes byproducts for the chemical industry, with a plan to adjust the product mix according to market demand and available feedstock mix. The incorporation of green hydrogen production units, with a significant portion funded by European funds, will enable a 70% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to traditional fuels. To ensure a stable supply of raw material, OMV Petrom acquired a 50% stake in Respiră Verde, facilitating the collection of 10,000 tons of used cooking oil yearly for biofuel production. The company's dedication to sustainability extends to its solar power investments and energy operations in Romania and the region, reinforcing its commitment to a lower carbon future.
