ORLEN Collaborates with Polish Universities to Advance Synthetic Fuel Technologies
Key Ideas
  • ORLEN partners with universities in Plock and Kraków to advance synthetic fuel production technology.
  • The collaboration aims to secure funding, utilize advanced modeling tools, conduct research projects, and train personnel.
  • ORLEN is preparing to meet demand for renewable aviation fuels, including e-SAF RFNBO, in compliance with EU regulations.
  • The agreement focuses on building scientific capabilities in e-fuels to develop cutting-edge technologies within the ORLEN Group.
ORLEN has entered into a strategic partnership with the Warsaw University of Technology Branch in Plock and the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków to collaborate on the advancement of synthetic fuel production technologies. The primary goal of this collaboration is to seek funding, provide expert support, utilize advanced tools for process modeling, conduct research projects, and train future personnel for the ORLEN Group. The company aims to enhance and adapt synthetic fuel technologies to meet the increasing demand for renewable fuels of non-biological origin, driven by European regulations such as RED III and ReFuelEU Aviation. The focus of this partnership is on building and enhancing scientific capabilities in e-fuels, particularly at the Warsaw University of Technology Branch in Plock. E-fuels are produced by combining hydrogen with carbon dioxide, with emissions offset during production, making them carbon-neutral. The collaboration will involve exchanging expert knowledge, implementing research projects, enhancing staff qualifications, and securing external funding. With the EU's Fit for 55 legislative proposals, including the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation, ORLEN is working on supplying sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) to major airports in Poland. The company plans to develop new products like synthetic aviation fuels produced using hydrogen from renewably-powered electrolysis and biogenic CO2. The ultimate aim is to establish an in-house Synthetic Fuel Laboratory and advance research and development in e-fuel production to make informed investment decisions for the future.
