OX1 Plant at Oxford Airport: Pioneering Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production
Key Ideas
  • OXCCU opens the world's first sustainable aviation fuel plant in Oxford, pioneering carbon-to-value technology.
  • The OX1 Plant will convert CO2 and H2 to jet fuel range hydrocarbons in a single step, reducing byproducts.
  • Plans for a larger OX2 plant in Hull by 2026 and commercial PtL SAF production for the UK are in progress.
  • OXCCU's innovative single-step process aims to significantly lower the cost of sustainable aviation fuel, advancing climate-friendly air travel.
OXCCU has inaugurated the groundbreaking OX1 Plant at Oxford Airport, heralded as the world's first sustainable aviation fuel facility. This new chapter in sustainable aviation marks a significant leap in carbon-to-value technology, as the plant will directly convert carbon dioxide and hydrogen into jet fuel range hydrocarbons in a singular process, minimizing byproducts. With an initial production capacity of 1kg of liquid fuel per day, OXCCU is set to commence operations in September. Plans for the future include the construction of the OX2 plant in Hull, capable of producing 200 litres per day by 2026, with further expansion to commercial plants for PtL SAF distribution in the UK and beyond. By streamlining the PtL fuel production process into a single step, OXCCU aims to eliminate the energy-intensive and complex conversion of CO2 to CO, presenting a cost-effective and scalable solution for sustainable aviation fuel. Andrew Symes, OXCCU's CEO, expressed enthusiasm for the plant's launch and emphasized the critical role of scaling up production to realize the vision of enabling climate-neutral air travel for future generations. This milestone underlines OXCCU's commitment to driving innovation in the aviation industry towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
