OXCCU's Green Hydrogen to SAF Plant at Saltend Chemicals Park
Key Ideas
  • OXCCU's SAF demonstration plant at Saltend Chemicals Park will use green hydrogen and biogenic CO2 to produce 200 L/d of sustainable aviation fuel.
  • The company received £2.8m in funding from the UK government's Advance Fuels Fund and is known for its novel CO2 hydrogenation process.
  • The UK government's Jet Zero strategy aims for net zero aviation emissions by 2050, with a SAF mandate starting in 2025 to drive sustainable aviation fuel demand.
  • Supported by the Advance Fuels Fund, the government plans to have five commercial SAF plants in construction by 2025, including projects by Esso Petroleum and LanzaTech.
OXCCU, a spinout from the University of Oxford, has chosen px Group's Saltend Chemicals Park in East Yorkshire, UK for its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) demonstration plant. The plant will utilize green hydrogen and biogenic CO2, converting biogas collected from waste into 200 liters per day of liquid fuel, primarily SAF. OXCCU was a recipient of £2.8m in funding from the UK government's Advance Fuels Fund and is recognized for its innovative CO2 hydrogenation process that minimizes oxygenate byproducts in SAF production. CEO Andrew Symes highlighted the efficiency of OXCCU's catalyst and process when combined with px Group's leading facilities. The plant's support facilities will be designed and constructed by px Group, who will also operate and maintain the facility. The UK government's Jet Zero strategy is driving efforts towards achieving net zero emissions in aviation by 2050, with plans to introduce a SAF mandate in 2025, requiring 10% of UK aviation fuel to be from sustainable sources by 2030. The government aims to reduce UK aviation carbon emissions significantly through initiatives like the SAF Mandate scheme. With support from the Advance Fuels Fund, multiple projects, including those by Esso Petroleum Company and LanzaTech, are underway to establish five commercial SAF plants by 2025, marking a substantial step towards sustainable aviation fuel production.
