PowerCell Sweden AB has embarked on a collaboration with an Australian aviation company to conduct a concept study for a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft powered by hydrogen fuel cells. The partnership aims to develop aircraft prototypes with minimal emissions and high energy efficiency suitable for future commercial use. The electric VTOL segment is seen as a promising avenue for sustainable aviation projects, with hydrogen fuel cells offering the advantage of high energy density relative to weight. As part of the agreement, PowerCell will provide expertise in designing and specifying the hydrogen fuel cell system for the aircraft prototypes, with an order of SEK 7m allocated for engineering work. The CEO of PowerCell Group, Richard Berkling, expresses optimism about the collaboration, emphasizing the potential of fuel cell technology to drive climate-friendly aviation and contribute to industry decarbonization.
