Public Attitudes on Decarbonising Aviation: A Roadmap for Sustainable Flight
Key Ideas
  • Majority of UK respondents concerned about climate change and perceive air transport as a significant emitter of damaging emissions.
  • Survey reveals willingness to use alternative forms of transport to reduce flight emissions, but only 38% willing to pay more for cleaner flights.
  • Support for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) highlighted, with a need for clearer communication on its benefits and effectiveness.
  • Research aims to shape messaging and actions for a low carbon future in aviation, aligning with sector goals for decarbonisation by 2050.
The Royal Aeronautical Society's research on public attitudes towards decarbonising aviation in the UK sheds light on the concerns and perceptions of over 2,000 respondents aged 16-75. The study reflects a high level of concern about climate change, with 58% believing that air transport emits more damaging emissions than other modes of transport. However, only 38% are willing to pay extra for flights to mitigate carbon emissions. The report emphasizes the necessity of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and advanced technologies for achieving Net Zero 2050 goals. The survey reveals that a majority of respondents find decarbonising aviation to be a challenging task compared to other transportation sectors. There is also a willingness among participants to explore alternative modes of transport to reduce flight emissions, showing a potential shift in consumer behavior towards sustainability. While there is support for a frequent flyer tax and higher aviation taxes if directed towards decarbonisation, opposition exists for taxes funding general government spending. Notably, respondents perceive SAF favorably for emitting fewer carbon emissions, but there is a lack of distinction between various types of sustainable fuels. The research also highlights varying opinions on carbon offsetting schemes, with only 36% considering them beneficial. Dr. Naomi Allen, Head of Research at RAeS, emphasizes the importance of understanding public sentiments to guide the aviation industry's communication and actions towards a low carbon future. The study aims to improve clarity in conveying the benefits of sustainable aviation practices and technologies to align with industry efforts for sustainable flight.
