The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has released the results of a feasibility study conducted by consultancy EY, exploring potential industrial options for the Grangemouth oil refinery in the United Kingdom. The study, costing £1.5 million, outlines nine proposals to redevelop the site after its decommissioning by Petroneois. These projects include innovative approaches such as waste recycling techniques like hydrothermal upcycling and chemical plastics recycling, as well as utilizing low-carbon hydrogen for processes like methanol production and ammonia synthesis. The aim is to attract private investment and create up to 800 new jobs by 2040 while transitioning towards sustainable practices. The governments at both UK and Scottish levels have shown strong commitment to the industrial future of Grangemouth. Initiatives like the £200 million funding package announced by Prime Minister Kier Starmer and the establishment of a £25 million Grangemouth Just Transition Fund by Scottish First Minister John Swinney highlight the support towards this redevelopment. Additionally, a joint £100 million Falkirk and Grangemouth Growth Deal will invest in local energy projects and support the reskilling of workers to facilitate growth in the region.
