Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands has made history by introducing the first-ever trial of a hydrogen-powered Ground Power Unit (GPU) for aircraft operations. This pioneering initiative, part of the TULIPS partnership co-funded by the European Commission, showcases Schiphol's commitment to sustainability in aviation. The hydrogen GPU provides electricity to KLM Cityhopper aircraft on the apron, aiming to make ground operations emission-free by 2030. The collaboration between Schiphol Airport, KLM, Zepp.solutions, and Dynell highlights the importance of working together to drive technological advancements in eco-friendly aviation. The new hydrogen GPU offers a more efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional e-GPUs and diesel GPUs, setting a new standard for ground operations. Under the TULIPS project, Schiphol leads 33 European aviation entities and knowledge institutes in developing sustainable aviation practices. In addition to the hydrogen GPU, the project explores Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) deliveries, energy storage solutions, and circular material initiatives, aligning with the goals of the EU Green Deal. By embracing the hydrogen GPU and other eco-friendly technologies, Schiphol Airport is not only reducing emissions but also improving air quality for employees and the local community. This positive step towards sustainability exemplifies the airport's dedication to innovation and environmental responsibility in the aviation industry.
