Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has made history as the first airport globally to conduct live tests with a hydrogen-powered ground power unit (H2-GPU). The innovative H2-GPU is currently supplying KLM Cityhopper aircraft on the apron with electricity, enhancing air quality and supporting environmental objectives. This initiative is part of the TULIPS partnership, a collaborative effort involving Schiphol, ground handling companies, and the aviation sector, aimed at achieving emission-free airport operations. The H2-GPU, designed by Zepp.solutions and Dynell, offers a time-saving advantage by allowing on-site refuelling using a tanker, unlike e-GPUs which require specific charging points. This development aligns with Schiphol's vision to transition to emission-free ground activities by 2030. Notably, the project is partially funded by the EU and conducted in partnership with KLM and other stakeholders. In addition to the hydrogen GPU, the TULIPS project focuses on various sustainability initiatives like large-scale SAF deliveries, sustainable energy storage solutions, and circular material approaches. By actively engaging in these advancements, Schiphol demonstrates its commitment to environmental responsibility and supporting the objectives of the EU Green Deal.
