Schiphol Airport Pioneers Hydrogen-Powered Ground Power Unit for Emission-Free Operations
Key Ideas
  • Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam conducts live tests with a hydrogen-powered ground power unit, marking a significant step towards emission-free operations.
  • The H2-GPU, developed by Zepp.solutions and Dynell, is being used to supply KLM Cityhopper aircraft with electricity on the apron, contributing to better air quality and environmental sustainability.
  • The new H2-GPU saves time by enabling on-site refuelling by a tanker, in contrast to e-GPUs that require special charging points. This innovation aligns with Schiphol's goal to have emission-free ground activities by 2030.
  • Part of the TULIPS partnership, funded by the European Commission, Schiphol is at the forefront of developing new technologies like large-scale SAF deliveries and circular material solutions to advance airport sustainability in line with the EU Green Deal.
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has made history as the first airport globally to conduct live tests with a hydrogen-powered ground power unit (H2-GPU). The innovative H2-GPU is currently supplying KLM Cityhopper aircraft on the apron with electricity, enhancing air quality and supporting environmental objectives. This initiative is part of the TULIPS partnership, a collaborative effort involving Schiphol, ground handling companies, and the aviation sector, aimed at achieving emission-free airport operations. The H2-GPU, designed by Zepp.solutions and Dynell, offers a time-saving advantage by allowing on-site refuelling using a tanker, unlike e-GPUs which require specific charging points. This development aligns with Schiphol's vision to transition to emission-free ground activities by 2030. Notably, the project is partially funded by the EU and conducted in partnership with KLM and other stakeholders. In addition to the hydrogen GPU, the TULIPS project focuses on various sustainability initiatives like large-scale SAF deliveries, sustainable energy storage solutions, and circular material approaches. By actively engaging in these advancements, Schiphol demonstrates its commitment to environmental responsibility and supporting the objectives of the EU Green Deal.
