  • Siemens emphasizes the importance of digital twins in designing alternative aircraft propulsion systems and supports Dovetail's commitment to sustainability and the circular economy in addressing climate change.
Siemens Digital Industries Software has partnered with Dovetail Electric Aviation, a sustainable aviation company headquartered in Australia with operations in Spain, to pioneer the design of zero emission, battery and hydrogen-electric propulsion systems for commercial aircraft. By utilizing Siemens Xcelerator software, Dovetail aims to retrofit legacy airplanes used by regional airlines and leisure and cargo flights, reducing operating costs by up to 40% and truly decarbonizing air transportation. Dovetail is the first company globally converting Cessna 208s to zero emission battery electric aircraft and designing hydrogen-electric retrofits for the Beechcraft King Air. The use of NX X software facilitates cloud-enabled computer-aided design (CAD), helping Dovetail enhance collaboration between its teams in Australia and Spain. This collaboration will enable the creation of digital twin design concepts and faster prototyping, thus saving time in the design process. Dovetail's CEO, David Doral, emphasizes the significance of retrofitting capable aircraft with new generation propulsion systems to achieve cleaner air travel and cost savings. In addition to battery electric propulsion, Dovetail is working on a hydrogen-electric version, including a fuel cell and hydrogen storage system. Siemens' software supports efficient editing and viewing of complex design models, expedites product development, and streamlines the design process by establishing a digital thread as a single source of truth. Siemens Digital Industries Software's Managing Director highlights the importance of digital twins in designing mission-critical products like alternative aircraft propulsion systems, aligning with Dovetail's goal of combatting climate change through technology and innovation. This partnership showcases the effectiveness of software technology in promoting sustainability and circular economy practices in the aviation industry.
