In Skellefteå, Sweden, a major green energy initiative is underway with the construction of an aviation fuel factory at Näsudden in Skelleftehamn. The project, a joint venture between Skellefteå Kraft and SkyNRG, aims to produce one hundred thousand tons of sustainable aviation fuel annually, known as eSAF, using water, renewable electricity, and captured carbon dioxide. This initiative is crucial as European airlines will be required to use this type of aviation fuel from 2030 onwards, with a target of at least 25 percent usage by 2050. SkyNRG, a pioneer in sustainable aviation fuel, has chosen northern Sweden as the location for one of their factories due to the region's green electricity network and access to non-fossil fuel carbon dioxide sources. The project is expected to create a new market for sustainable aviation fuel, with significant investment and partnership commitments. Joachim Nordin, CEO of Skellefteå Kraft, views this project as a strategic solution to the energy company's challenges, including addressing the surplus of electricity in northern Sweden and optimizing district heating operations. Additionally, plans for a pilot plant for hydrogen production indicate a comprehensive approach to green energy innovation. The financing of the aviation fuel factory, estimated between 20 and 25 billion kronor, will involve contributions from banks, external investors, and SkyNRG. While Skellefteå Kraft's investment decision is pending, the partnership with SkyNRG signals a long-term commitment to sustainable energy practices and local economic development.
