TotalEnergies has announced strategic investments at its Antwerp platform to enhance competitiveness and accelerate decarbonization efforts. The site, integral to TotalEnergies' European operations, is set to undergo significant changes to align with market trends and sustainability goals. The company's focus on green hydrogen production includes a partnership with Air Liquide for a 200 MW electrolyzer project, contributing to a reduction of up to 150,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually by 2027. Moreover, a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) initiative will see the production of 50,000 tons per year at the site starting in 2025, aiding the aviation sector in lowering its carbon footprint. TotalEnergies' commitment to renewable energy extends to process electrification and battery storage, with the Antwerp platform hosting the company's largest battery storage system in Europe. Despite these advancements, the platform is also addressing petrochemical market challenges by phasing out its oldest steam cracker due to overcapacity, ensuring the site remains competitive and aligned with evolving demands. TotalEnergies' responsible approach extends to its workforce management, with plans to offer retirement or internal transfers to the 253 employees affected by the steam cracker closure, demonstrating a commitment to employee well-being and sustainable operations.
