The UK government, through the Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, has announced a significant funding of around £103m at the opening of the 2024 Farnborough Airshow to advance sustainable air travel. This funding is channeled through the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) Programme to support green air travel initiatives. The aerospace industry's trade body, ADS, recently reported that the sector contributed £38bn to the UK economy in 2023. The supported projects will be led by KN Aerospace, Queens University, Rolls-Royce, Short Brothers, and ZeroAvia, focusing on innovations in zero-emission hydrogen-powered flight, sustainable propulsion systems, and turbine technologies. Notable projects include the HOTLINE project by Rolls-Royce to innovate turbine technologies, the AFCAD project by ZeroAvia to advance high-temperature fuel cell stack technology for zero-emission hydrogen flights, and the Scenic Composites project led by Queen's University Belfast to enhance aerospace capabilities in Belfast region. The investments in these cutting-edge aerospace projects underline the UK's dedication to pioneering sustainable air travel, creating high-skilled jobs, fostering economic growth, and positioning the country at the forefront of green aviation technology.
