A new study by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) is calling for urgent action in the aviation industry to develop zero-emission aircraft to meet net-zero carbon emissions targets by 2050. The study emphasizes the need for manufacturers to significantly increase investments in lower-emitting aircraft and ensure that all new planes can utilize 100% sustainable aviation fuel by 2030. Additionally, the study advocates for the acceleration of zero-emission aircraft development, particularly focusing on hydrogen-powered planes, to achieve carbon neutrality starting around 2035. The ICCT's calculations reveal a budget of 18.4 billion tonnes of carbon emissions for the aviation industry, with the global aircraft fleet expected to emit 9 billion tonnes of CO2 by 2023. To avoid surpassing the net-zero emission target in 2050, the study suggests that all aircraft delivered after 2042 should be zero-emission. While some in the industry have been investing in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as an interim solution for emission reductions, the study highlights the necessity of transitioning away from fossil fuels by the mid-2030s. Challenges remain with SAF production capacity and regulatory requirements, indicating that a shift towards zero-emission aircraft is crucial for long-term sustainability. Startups like ZeroAvia are recognized for their leadership in hydrogen aircraft development, with plans to introduce hydrogen-powered planes in the near future. The study's recommendations come as a wake-up call for the aviation sector, emphasizing the importance of immediate action to drive the industry towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
