The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced the allocation of more than $36 million in grant funding to Washington state for sustainable aviation projects as part of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). This funding, provided through the Fueling Aviation’s Sustainable Transition (FAST) program, aims to promote the production and utilization of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and the advancement of low-emission aviation technology. Senator Patty Murray played a key role in including the FAST program within the IRA, highlighting the importance of transitioning towards sustainable technology in aviation. Under the FAST program, two specific areas are targeted: SAF projects and low-emission technology development for aviation. The grant recipients include BP America's Cherry Point Refinery, ZeroAvia, APiJET, and Boeing, each focusing on different aspects of sustainable technology within aviation. These companies will work on projects ranging from SAF production and blending to the development of hydrogen fuel-cell propulsion systems, fuel-optimization software for airlines, and improved fuel measurement methods. Senator Murray expressed pride in securing funding for these projects, emphasizing the significance of driving clean energy innovation and job creation while enhancing sustainability and efficiency in the aerospace sector. The grants aim to position Washington state as a leader in aerospace innovation and clean energy solutions, aligning with the state's commitment to research, innovation, and environmental stewardship.
