Australia-Singapore Initiative to Accelerate Green Shipping with Low Emissions Technologies
Key Ideas
  • Australia and Singapore announce funding for eight innovative projects aimed at reducing emissions in the maritime sector.
  • Initiative supports the use of zero or near-zero greenhouse gas emission technologies like hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol.
  • Projects cover areas such as hydrogen fuel production, electric ferries, safety systems, digital tools, and AI-based solutions.
  • Collaboration between research institutions and industry partners to accelerate the adoption of low-emission technologies in shipping.
Australia and Singapore have jointly launched the Australia-Singapore Initiative on Low Emissions Technologies (ASLET), allocating $20 million to support projects that reduce emissions in the maritime sector. The initiative aligns with the goals of the Green and Digital Shipping Corridor between the two countries, focusing on decarbonisation and digitisation of shipping routes. ASLET, managed by CSIRO and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, selected eight projects from 32 applications for funding. These projects involve innovations in hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol technologies for maritime and port operations. Among the selected projects are safety training for ammonia use, a study on e-methanol in vessels, hydrogen fuel production systems, and electric ferry development. The initiatives also include digital tools for environmental analysis, AI-based systems for managing hydrogen and ammonia fuels, and safety systems for leak detection. These projects aim to accelerate the adoption of low-emission technologies in the maritime sector, promoting sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
