Carbon Captured Transhipper: Revolutionizing Maritime Industry Decarbonization
Key Ideas
  • Carbon Captured Transhipper (CCT) concept combines advanced carbon capture technology and maritime logistics for efficient CO2 transfer and storage.
  • Key technical features of CCT include high maneuverability, efficient CO2 transfer systems, and utilization of liquefied CO2 for further conversion into synthetic fuels.
  • Benefits of CCT include reducing shipping emissions, enhancing operational efficiency, and promoting the decarbonization process of the maritime industry.
The maritime industry, essential for global trade, is under increasing pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To address this challenge, innovative solutions such as the Carbon Captured Transhipper (CCT) concept have been developed. CCT, a project by Polish ship design office Seatech Engineering in collaboration with Wavelength Technology Center, aims to revolutionize the maritime industry's decarbonization efforts. The CCT concept involves a specialized vessel designed to receive liquefied CO2 from ships equipped with carbon capture technology. This captured CO2 is then stored onboard the CCT before being offloaded at onshore facilities. The vessel, equipped with advanced carbon handling systems and tailor-made ship design, offers efficient ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore operations. Key technical features of the CCT include high maneuverability ensured by thrusters, 360-degree visibility, cryogenic hose connections for CO2 transfer, and custody transfer systems for accurate volume measurements. The vessel is designed to store CO2 in type-C tanks at low pressure and has the option for liquefaction systems to reduce boil-off gas. Benefits of the CCT concept include reducing shipping emissions by enabling the collection, storage, and offloading of CO2, enhancing operational efficiency through effective CO2 transfer systems, and contributing to the overall decarbonization process of the maritime industry. By offering a comprehensive approach to emissions reduction and operational enhancements, the CCT concept presents a promising solution for the sustainability of the marine sector.
