CMB.Tech Signs Contract for Hydrogen-Powered Tugs in Dubai
Key Ideas
- CMB.Tech has signed a shipbuilding contract with Damen’s Dubai shipyard for four hydrogen-powered tugs, featuring dual-fuel hydrogen technology and high-speed engines to minimize emissions.
- The tugs meet strict environmental standards, carry up to 16 hydrogen bottles for safe storage, and can switch to traditional fuel if needed, marking a significant step in decarbonizing port operations.
- The collaboration received approval from Lloyd’s Register, showcasing the industry's support for green hydrogen technology, with plans for potential expansion beyond the initial four vessels.
- CMB.Tech's CEO emphasized the importance of decarbonization in the shipping industry and highlighted the global impact of hydrogen tugs in reducing carbon emissions and driving green hydrogen production.
Belgium-based CMB.Tech has entered a shipbuilding agreement with Dubai's Damen shipyard for the construction of four hydrogen-powered tugs, incorporating dual-fuel hydrogen technology to enhance sustainability. These tugs, part of the ASD Tug 2812 FF-H2 model, boast high bollard pull and comply with stringent environmental regulations like IMO Tier III and EU Stage V. With four advanced dual-fuel hydrogen engines, the vessels aim to minimize NOx and CO2 emissions, utilizing modular storage systems for compressed hydrogen for safe onboard storage. Each tug can store up to 16 hydrogen bottles, holding a total of 736 kg of pressurized hydrogen at 350 bar. While predominantly hydrogen-powered, they offer the flexibility to switch to traditional fuel when necessary, ensuring seamless operation. The recent signing at Albwardy Damen in Sharjah, during the ITS Convention & Exhibition in Dubai, saw the approval of CMB.Tech's hydrogen system by Lloyd’s Register, marking a significant milestone in green maritime technology. CMB.Tech's CEO highlighted the pivotal role of these hydrogen tugs in driving decarbonization in port operations globally, stressing the inevitability of the shipping industry's transition towards greener practices. The agreement represents a strategic partnership between CMB.Tech and Damen, building on their successful collaboration in developing hydrogen-powered vessels, indicating a promising future for sustainable maritime solutions.
