DRIFT Energy, a British startup, has successfully raised £4.65 million in seed funding to develop a revolutionary concept of a sailing vessel that will produce green hydrogen at sea. The funding round, led by Octopus Energy and backed by Blue Action Accelerator, will enable the company to advance its ambitious project and scale up vessel production in the coming year. DRIFT Energy's innovative approach involves deploying high-performance sailing vessels that utilize ocean winds to generate green hydrogen, which can be delivered globally after production. The company's MVY concept, unveiled at Monaco in the previous year, showcases a 58-meter vessel capable of independently producing and storing energy through turbines that capture kinetic energy. This technology allows the vessel to generate over 140 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, significantly reducing CO2 emissions. By installing the electrolyzer on a ship and harnessing wind power at sea, DRIFT Energy aims to capitalize on the abundant renewable energy sources present over oceans. The company's efforts have garnered support from investors and industry experts, emphasizing the potential for mobile renewable energy solutions to contribute to sustainability and marine conservation. With additional funding from Innovate UK, DRIFT Energy is set to accelerate its research and development activities, furthering its mission to pioneer innovative renewable energy technologies.
