Energy Observer, a groundbreaking project launched in Saint-Malo, France, in 2017, has recently completed a remarkable seven-year journey across the world's seas and oceans. The laboratory ship, in partnership with Air Liquide, has successfully demonstrated the feasibility of clean and renewable technologies, including hydrogen, for maritime transport under varying weather conditions. Through a combination of solar, wind, hydraulic, and hydrogen generated by seawater electrolysis, Energy Observer became the world's first energy self-sufficient catamaran. The utilization of hydrogen as a storage medium enabled the vessel to store surplus energy and compensate for the intermittency of renewable sources, resulting in zero greenhouse gas emissions, minimal noise, and particle emissions. The crew aboard Energy Observer comprised sailors, technicians, engineers, scientists, and reporters dedicated to exploring, testing, and advancing low-carbon energy solutions while raising awareness about the energy transition globally. Interactions with over 350,000 individuals during numerous stopovers were pivotal in conveying the importance of sustainable practices and inspiring hope for a greener future.
