France recently marked a milestone in sustainable transportation with the launch of the Zulu 06, the nation's first hydrogen-powered river vessel. The 55-meter ship, commissioned by the Sogestran Group, was unveiled in Paris on the Seine River. Designed to transport small deck cargoes within the city, the Zulu 06 boasts a cargo capacity of 400 tons. Powered by a cutting-edge system supplied by ABB Marine & Ports, including two 200 kW hydrogen fuel cells from Ballard, the vessel carries 300 kilos of compressed hydrogen, enabling a week of operation before refills. This initiative, supported by the French Minister of Transport, François Durovray, symbolizes a pivotal moment in France's energy transition, emphasizing the importance of green mobility. The project, a part of the EU-funded FLAGSHIPS program, aims to revolutionize waterborne transport by promoting zero-emission solutions through collaborative efforts between public and private sectors. Pascal Girardet, CEO of Sogestran Group, highlighted the significance of such innovations in driving the hydrogen industry forward and establishing a sustainable value chain. The success of the Zulu 06 paves the way for future projects like the FPS Waal, set to transform a conventional vessel into a zero-emission one for operations on the Rhine, further contributing to the advancement of clean transportation in Europe.
