France Unveils First Hydrogen Fuel Cell-Powered River Vessel in Paris
Key Ideas
- French company Sogestran Group introduces Zulu 06, the first hydrogen fuel cell-powered river vessel in France, operating on the Seine in Paris.
- The vessel, supported by ABB Marine, Ballard hydrogen fuel cells, and lithium-ion batteries, aims for zero-emission operations and enhances performance through a hybrid setup.
- Part of the EU-funded FLAGSHIPS project, Zulu 06 is a step towards achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from shipping by 2050, showcasing a shift towards sustainable marine fuel solutions.
- Originally a diesel-electric vessel, Zulu 06's transformation was designed by Norwegian firm LMG Marin, with plans for operational deployment after an 18-month demonstration period.
The Sogestran Group, a French shipping company, has introduced the Zulu 06, a groundbreaking hydrogen fuel cell-powered river vessel, set to operate primarily on the Seine in Paris. Measuring 55 meters long and 8 meters wide, the vessel has a cargo capacity of 400 tonnes and will be managed by Sogestran's subsidiary, Compagnie Fluviale de Transport. The Zulu 06 features a hybrid power system comprising hydrogen fuel cells from Ballard, a power generation system by ABB Marine and Ports, and a 90kWh lithium-ion battery bank. With 300 kg of compressed hydrogen, the vessel can achieve seven days of operational autonomy. Safety measures include leak and fire detectors, as well as a fixed fire extinguishing system. The vessel's power architecture is designed to optimize performance with the hydrogen fuel cells and batteries working in synergy.
