HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering has acquired the Finnish fuel cell company Convion for approximately €72 million in a move to strengthen its position in the clean energy sector. Convion, based in Helsinki, Finland, specializes in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) and solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOEC), technologies known for their high efficiency and ability to operate at high temperatures. This acquisition is aimed at leveraging Convion's advancements in fuel cell technology to drive HD Korea Shipbuilding's capabilities forward. HD Hydrogen, a subsidiary established with a significant investment, will oversee the fuel cell business focusing on domestic power generation and marine applications, while Convion will concentrate on developing core fuel cell technologies and expanding in Europe. This strategic acquisition follows HD Korea Shipbuilding's previous investments in the fuel cell sector, including a €45 million agreement with Elcogen AS to enhance large-scale SOFC systems. The company's commitment to advancing in clean energy technologies is evident through these moves.
