  • The program plans to transition all tugs in major Indian ports to green alternatives by 2040, aligning with national visions for renewable energy use and emission reduction.
  • Program expected to boost the domestic tug industry, creating job opportunities in shipbuilding and design, while promoting green technologies to meet sustainability targets.
Indian Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, has inaugurated the Standard Operating Procedure for the Green Tug Transition Program. This initiative aims to enhance India's maritime sector by replacing diesel-powered tugs with eco-friendly alternatives. The program, initially introduced as part of the 'Panch Karma Sankalp' program, will phase out traditional fuel-powered harbour tugs with greener options to reduce carbon footprint in maritime activities. The Green Tug Transition Program is set to commence Phase 1 from October 1, 2024, till December 31, 2027, with four Major Ports committed to acquiring at least two green tugs each. These tugs will adhere to standardized designs and specifications developed by the Standing Specification Committee, with an approximate investment of INR 1,000 crores in constructing these sustainable tugboats. In an effort to stay at the forefront of industry advancements, the program plans to introduce various green technologies like battery-electric tugs, hybrids, methanol, and green hydrogen. By 2040, the goal is to convert all tugs operating in major Indian ports to eco-friendly alternatives, with new tugs needing to meet program criteria from 2033 onwards. The Green Tug Transition Program has been praised as a crucial step towards achieving India's vision of a sustainable and eco-friendly maritime sector. Additionally, it aligns with national strategies such as the Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, aiming to significantly reduce carbon emissions and increase renewable energy usage in major ports. The program is expected to not only promote sustainability but also stimulate the domestic tug industry by creating job opportunities in shipbuilding and design. Overall, the Green Tug Transition Program signifies a positive shift in India's maritime sector towards environmental consciousness and sustainable practices, setting a trajectory towards a cleaner and greener maritime future.
