In a strategic move to decarbonize Indonesia's maritime transport sector, PT PLN (Persero) has partnered with the Ministry of Transportation, PT HDF Energy Indonesia, and PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry (Persero) to explore the use of green hydrogen as a marine fuel. This joint study agreement, unveiled during the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit in Jakarta, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime industry and align with Indonesia's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). The Ministry of Transportation plans to convert conventional vessels into hybrid hydrogen-battery powered ships to promote low-emission transport solutions. PLN's President Director highlighted the partnership's role in accelerating NDC targets and achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060, in line with President Prabowo Subianto's vision for energy independence. The study will initially target Eastern Indonesia, known for its renewable energy resources, and the adoption of hydrogen-based vehicles as a complement to electric vehicles is emphasized. PLN, a pioneer in Indonesia's hydrogen ecosystem, has already produced 203 tons of green hydrogen through Green Hydrogen Plants (GHP) across the country. PT HDF Energy Indonesia's commitment to decarbonizing the maritime sector using green hydrogen technologies reflects a broader effort to position Indonesia as a leader in hydrogen innovation, with a focus on showcasing French clean tech globally.
