  • The CCRV not only aims to advance marine research along the California coast but also serves as a platform for hands-on learning, aligning with UC San Diego's educational mission.
Naval architecture and marine engineering firm Glosten has been awarded an Approval in Principle (AIP) by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for the design of UC San Diego’s new hydrogen-hybrid Coastal-Class Research Vessel (CCRV), which will be operated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography. This innovative vessel features a propulsion system powered by hydrogen fuel cells for zero-emissions operation, making it a pioneering model for medium-sized coastal vessels. Glosten, along with Siemens Energy (SE), completed the preliminary design for the CCRV, overcoming complex regulatory challenges related to liquid hydrogen fuel systems. The collaborative effort included a feasibility study by Glosten, Scripps Oceanography, Sandia National Laboratories, and DNV, funded by MARAD, which paved the way for the CCRV's development. The vessel's design approval signifies a milestone in validating hydrogen-fuel-cell propulsion for maritime use, showcasing a commitment to environmental sustainability. The CCRV's mission to study the marine ecosystem along the California coast will be supported by its emissions-free hydrogen fuel cells, demonstrating a significant step towards reducing environmental impact in maritime operations. Additionally, the CCRV will play a crucial role in educating future generations of scientists, leaders, and policymakers, serving as a hands-on learning platform for UC San Diego students. The project team is actively advancing the CCRV towards construction, aiming to revolutionize the maritime industry through cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices.
