The Klaipėda State Seaport Authority has recently unveiled the first green hydrogen and electricity-powered ship in Lithuania, demonstrating the country's leap towards sustainable maritime practices. The ship, constructed at the West Baltic Shipyard, boasts a comprehensive design aimed at enhancing environmental friendliness. The vessel, primarily responsible for waste collection and management, is equipped with advanced technologies such as a hydrogen fuel cell system and 2,000 kWh batteries, enabling it to operate for up to 36 hours without requiring additional charging. With a focus on cleaner and more efficient waste management, the ship features special tanks and a rainwater treatment plant to ensure the responsible disposal of liquid waste. Valued at €12 million, this groundbreaking project signifies a significant step towards eco-friendly port operations, positioning Lithuania as a modern maritime nation. Algis Latakas, Director General of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, emphasized the importance of this new approach to port operations, highlighting the vessel's role in promoting environmental sustainability.
