MOL's Wind Hunter Project: Offshore Green Hydrogen Supply in Tokyo Bay
Key Ideas
  • MOL's Wind Hunter Project achieves milestone by supplying green hydrogen onshore in Tokyo's central breakwater area.
  • The project focuses on zero-emission solutions using wind power and hydrogen, demonstrating innovative energy initiatives.
  • MOL plans to produce 100 Nm3 of hydrogen in Tokyo Bay by FY2025, supporting electricity supply to various facilities.
  • Future plans include a large demonstration vessel for the Wind Hunter project, set for construction and commercialization in the 2030s.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has successfully conducted the Wind Hunter Project, a groundbreaking initiative focused on zero-emission solutions through wind power and hydrogen. The project involved the demonstration yacht 'Winz Maru' producing and supplying green hydrogen onshore in Tokyo's central breakwater area, marking a global first in vessel-based hydrogen production. Starting from Omura Bay in Sasebo City, MOL progressed through hydrogen production, storage, and onboard usage phases before shifting efforts to Tokyo Bay under the Tokyo Bay eSG Project. Modifications were made to Winz Maru to convert green hydrogen into methylcyclohexane (MCH) onboard, enabling safe supply capacity in Tokyo Bay's sea conditions. By FY2025, MOL aims to produce 100 Nm3 of hydrogen in Tokyo Bay, equivalent to 200 liters of MCH, while also providing electricity to nearby facilities. Looking ahead, MOL plans to develop a large demonstration vessel for the Wind Hunter project, with construction and commercialization targeted for the 2030s, pending the establishment of a domestic hydrogen value chain. A model of the Wind Hunter will be showcased at the 2025 World Exposition in Osaka, Kansai. MOL's focus on innovation and sustainability in the transportation sector showcases its commitment to advancing renewable energy sources and pioneering future technologies.
