French cruise line operator PONANT has secured support from the European Commission for its Swap2Zero project, aimed at developing the 'first' transoceanic vessel striving for carbon neutrality. The project is part of the Innovation Fund, with PONANT being one of the winners in the maritime sector. The innovative hybrid passenger cruise ship, expected to be operational by 2030, will utilize a mix of wind power, liquid hydrogen (LH2), and bio-liquefied natural gas (bio-LNG) for propulsion. It will incorporate various cutting-edge technologies, including photovoltaic panels, low and high-temperature fuel cells, onboard carbon capture, and an advanced energy management system, ensuring operational autonomy for up to one month. PONANT's collaboration with naval architecture firm Stirling Design International is crucial in designing this environmentally friendly vessel. The project received additional support from the French State and BPI through CORIMER 2023. PONANT's Secretary General, Patrick Augier, expressed pride in the company's selection for the INNOVFUND, highlighting the project's role in promoting French technological expertise and sustainable maritime solutions. Moreover, the partnership with FARWIND Energy focuses on developing renewable hydrogen refueling solutions for the vessel, further enhancing its eco-friendly features. PONANT's commitment to pioneering sustainable practices in the maritime industry is evident through the Swap2Zero project, showcasing a significant step towards achieving carbon neutrality in maritime transportation.
