Portsmouth International Port Leading the Charge Towards Green Maritime Infrastructure
Key Ideas
  • Portsmouth International Port is investing over US$30M in facilities to provide electrical power to ferries and cruise ships, aiming to reduce emissions while in port.
  • The port's project manager expects the facilities to be operational by June 2025, with Brittany Ferries' hybrid-electric ships among those set to benefit.
  • This initiative could serve as a blueprint for other UK and European ports looking to enhance their green maritime infrastructure.
  • Riviera is hosting upcoming maritime conferences focusing on decarbonisation pathways for Asia's shipping industry and the use of hybrid, electric, and hydrogen fuel cells in Bergen in 2025.
Portsmouth International Port in the United Kingdom is making significant investments of over US$30 million to equip its facilities with the necessary infrastructure to provide electrical power to ferries and cruise ships. Following the success of supplying power to berthing tugboats, the port aims to reduce emissions from ships while they are docked. The project is expected to be completed this year, with the capability to allow multiple ships, including Brittany Ferries' hybrid-electric vessels, to connect to power sources at three different berths simultaneously. The port's project manager, Anisa Koci, shared details of the project during Riviera's conference in London in February 2025. The infrastructure project, totaling £24.0M (US$30.3M), is on track to be a model for other ports in the UK and Europe seeking to enhance their sustainability practices. The first ships are expected to receive power from the new facilities in June 2025, coinciding with the beginning of a three-year demonstration project. Brittany Ferries, a prominent operator in the region, has already deployed two hybrid-electric ferries, Saint-Malo and Guillaume de Normandie, designed for low-emissions sailings between France and the UK. These vessels are equipped with AYK Energy's 12-MWh Orion+ battery systems, enhancing their environmental performance. Moreover, Riviera is organizing two significant maritime conferences in 2025. The Maritime Decarbonisation Conference Asia, scheduled for April in Singapore, will focus on decarbonisation strategies for Asia's shipping industry. In October, the Maritime Hybrid, Electric & Hydrogen Fuel Cells Conference & Exhibition in Bergen will showcase the latest developments in green maritime technologies. Abstract submissions for papers are currently being accepted for the Bergen event.
