Provaris Energy's Concept Design Study Reveals Efficient Hydrogen Compression Facilities for Marine Transport
Key Ideas
  • The Concept Design Study by Provaris Energy highlighted the low energy use and capital costs of their compressed hydrogen supply chain for regional marine transport.
  • Compression facilities had a capital cost of €120 million, a fraction of the total capex, with energy efficiency up to 5 times better than ammonia synthesis.
  • The Study's outcomes suggested a 20% lower delivered price for hydrogen compared to ammonia, aligning with recent EU Hydrogen Bank auction results.
  • The Study results will support the development of site-specific compression facilities for export and import terminals, enhancing the efficiency and competitiveness of hydrogen supply.
Provaris Energy Ltd has completed its Concept Design Study, demonstrating the efficiency of its compressed hydrogen supply chain for regional marine transport. The Study, based on a 540MW capacity reservation export site, emphasized the low energy use and capital costs of Provaris' compression facilities. Key outcomes included the confirmation of low energy consumption for compression, with only approximately 1.5 kWh per kg of hydrogen required for storage and loading, showcasing a superior energy efficiency compared to ammonia synthesis. The Study highlighted that compression accounted for only 2.8% of the power requirement at the export site, leaving the majority available for hydrogen production. Furthermore, the capital cost of compression facilities was shown to be minimal compared to the total capex of the supply chain. This efficiency resulted in approximately 50% greater hydrogen volumes being delivered to the customer compared to ammonia supply. With the Study's positive outcomes, Provaris aims to develop compression facilities for specific export and import terminals, including locations in Norway and the Port of Rotterdam. The Study aligns with Europe's focus on hydrogen projects, as demonstrated by recent auctions allocating significant funding to green ammonia and hydrogen projects. Provaris Energy's innovative approach and collaboration with key partners position it as a leading player in the development of efficient hydrogen supply chains.
