Revolutionizing Coastal Transport: Introducing the Hydrogen-Powered Sea Cheetah WIGE
Key Ideas
  • Miami-based Sea Cheetah Corporation partners with H3 Dynamics to develop the Sea Cheetah WIGE, a hydrogen-powered wing-in-ground effect vessel for coastal marine transport.
  • H3 Dynamics will provide expertise in building a hydrogen-electric powertrain, allowing the vessel to fly a few meters above water and travel at speeds exceeding 135 knots.
  • The partnership aims to deploy decentralized green hydrogen production systems for quick fueling and vessel turnaround, enabling the Sea Cheetah to carry more payload, be faster, and more fuel-efficient than existing air and watercraft.
  • The collaboration between Sea Cheetah and H3 Dynamics signals a major leap in enhancing the usability and sustainability of marine transport for isolated communities through innovative hydrogen technology.
Miami-based Sea Cheetah Corporation is collaborating with the Franco-US hydrogen propulsion firm H3 Dynamics to develop a revolutionary hydrogen-powered wing-in-ground effect vessel known as the Sea Cheetah WIGE. This innovative vessel aims to provide zero emissions transport solutions for coastal and island communities by leveraging H3 Dynamics' expertise in hydrogen propulsion to create a hydrogen-electric powertrain for the craft. The Sea Cheetah WIGE, named after the Wing-in-Ground-Effect hull, is designed to fly just a few meters above the water at speeds exceeding 135 knots. Due to its low altitude of under 50 feet, the vessel falls under maritime regulations rather than aviation, complying with the International Maritime Organisation's WIGE ship classification. The partnership also plans to deploy decentralized green hydrogen production systems to ensure rapid fueling and quick vessel turnaround. Taras Wankewycz, CEO of H3 Dynamics, highlighted how the hybrid hydrogen-powered powertrain will significantly enhance the range and payload capacities of the Sea Cheetah WIGE, opening up new applications for such vessels worldwide. Serge Markoff, founder and CEO of Sea Cheetah, emphasized that the lighter aircraft powertrain will enable the vessel to efficiently fulfill its mission of zero-emission last-mile delivery to isolated communities. By combining advanced technologies from both companies, the Sea Cheetah WIGE is projected to carry three times more payload than competing air and watercraft, be ten times faster than boats, and ten times more fuel-efficient than aircraft. This collaboration heralds a new era in marine transport, showcasing the potential of hydrogen technology to revolutionize coastal connectivity and sustainability.
