Sea Change: America's First Hydrogen-Powered Ferry Sets Sail in San Francisco
Key Ideas
  • San Francisco launches Sea Change, the first hydrogen-powered passenger ferry in the U.S., featuring clean emissions and innovative technology.
  • Sea Change's zero-emissions system includes 360 kW of PEM fuel cells, 100 kWh of li-Ion battery storage, and 600 kW of electric motor propulsion.
  • The ferry will offer free transport in the San Francisco Bay Ferry network for a six-month demonstration period to showcase fuel-cell technology.
  • Sponsored by partners including Chevron and United Airlines, Sea Change aims to boost consumer confidence in hydrogen and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
San Francisco is now home to America's first hydrogen-powered passenger ferry, Sea Change. This 75-passenger catamaran ferry features an integrated hydrogen power system with 360 kW of fuel cells, 100 kWh of battery storage, and 600 kW of electric motor propulsion. The vessel, fueled by compressed hydrogen, emits only water vapor, with part of it being used in the onboard water fountain, making it the only vessel in the world with drinkable emissions. Sea Change, owned by SWITCH Maritime, was developed with support from the California Air Resources Board and various sponsors. The ferry will operate for a six-month demonstration period, offering free transport in the San Francisco Bay Ferry network to showcase the viability of fuel-cell technology in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality. The launch of Sea Change represents a collaboration between the public and private sectors, aiming to boost consumer confidence in hydrogen as an alternative energy source. With sponsors like Chevron New Energies, Golden Gate Bridge District, and United Airlines, Sea Change sets a precedent for the energy transition in the maritime industry, not only in California but beyond.
