Sea Change: US Coast Guard Approves First Hydrogen Passenger Ferry for Commercial Operations
Key Ideas
  • Switch Maritime's Sea Change, powered by advanced hydrogen technology, has received US Coast Guard approval for commercial operations.
  • The ferry, equipped with cutting-edge components, can travel long distances, carry passengers, and operate sustainably and efficiently.
  • The approval marks a significant step towards eco-friendly maritime transport, with plans for more hydrogen-powered vessels in the future.
Switch Maritime's Sea Change has made history as the first hydrogen passenger ferry in the US to receive US Coast Guard approval for commercial operations. The 70-ft catamaran, powered by 360-kW Cummins fuel cells, 242-kg hydrogen storage tanks from Hexagon Purus, and 600-kW electric propulsion from BAE, is set to commence full service later this year in Alameda. After sea trials and finalization in Bellingham, the ferry will officially launch in August 2023. West Coast Clean Fuels will supply 50,000 kg of green hydrogen annually for the vessel. Capable of covering 300 nautical miles without refueling, carrying up to 75 passengers, and reaching speeds of 15 knots, the Sea Change represents a milestone in sustainable maritime transport. The approval paves the way for a 6-month trial in the California Bay Area, with plans to establish a permanent eco-friendly ferry route. Switch Maritime's funding and future vessel construction plans demonstrate a commitment to replacing carbon-intensive fleets with zero-emission alternatives.
