Switch Maritime, a pioneering company in the US maritime industry, is making significant strides in advancing zero-emissions vessel projects with a focus on hydrogen fuel-cell technology. In partnership with LH2 Shipping and LMG Marin, Switch is set to commence the construction of an 80-car, 300-passenger ropax vehicle ferry that will operate on liquid hydrogen fuel, following the success of their first hydrogen-powered vessel, Sea Change. The new ferry design aims to bring innovative zero-carbon LH2 fuelling to heavier workboats, emphasizing sustainability and environmental consciousness. Despite the need for US Coast Guard compliance, Switch is determined to lead the energy transition in US maritime shipping by adhering to safety standards and regulations. By leveraging liquid hydrogen stored in cryogenic tanks and utilizing PEM fuel cells for electricity generation, the upcoming ferry will have a service speed of 14 knots, offering a promising solution for efficient, eco-friendly maritime transportation. With plans to minimize refueling frequency and eliminate the need for shoreside electric charging infrastructure, Switch Maritime's initiatives exemplify a forward-thinking approach towards a greener future in the marine industry.
