In Tokyo, ClassNK has granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) for the design concept of a hydrogen-fueled engine compatible 5,000KL oil tanker with an electric propulsion system. This collaboration involving UYENO TRANSTECH LTD., YANMAR POWER TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD., and Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. marks a significant milestone as the world's first AiP for an oil tanker using liquefied hydrogen as fuel. The project is part of the 'Development of Large-scale Hydrogen-fueled Domestic Tanker and Demonstration of Zero-Emission Ships' initiative by the Nippon Foundation, highlighting a commitment to decarbonize the shipping industry. ClassNK's review process, which encompassed strict rules like the IGF Code and guidelines for ships using alternative fuels, led to the issuance of the AiP, a first under the 'Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels' released in May 2024.
