Abu Dhabi is taking a significant step towards sustainable and eco-friendly public transportation with the upcoming launch of electric and hydrogen-powered buses. As part of the city's commitment to green initiatives, the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) revealed plans to introduce these zero-emission buses to the public. The initiative aims to convert 20% of the public transportation system to green alternatives by 2030 and achieve complete environmental friendliness by 2050. The buses will operate solely within Abu Dhabi, with the installation of charging stations in bus depots to support their efficient and continuous operation. During a forum organized by Khaleej Times, Anan Alamri, a senior official at ITC, highlighted the environmental benefits of electric and hydrogen buses, emphasizing their role in reducing harmful pollutants and greenhouse gases. Alamri mentioned that hydrogen buses, in particular, emit only water vapor, making them a clean and sustainable choice for public transport. Furthermore, the initiative includes training young Emirati engineers in China and South Korea to manage and maintain these innovative buses, showcasing the city's investment in developing local expertise in green technologies. Additionally, previous efforts by ITC included deploying an all-electric bus fleet for intercity transportation, resulting in a notable reduction of carbon emissions. This initiative aligns with Abu Dhabi's vision for a greener future and sets a precedent for eco-conscious urban planning and sustainable mobility practices.
