BC Transit has announced a new fleet acquisition strategy that entails adding over 900 buses to its fleet in the next five years. The company aims to incorporate a mix of lower carbon fuel type and traditional propulsion vehicles to meet the increasing demands for public transport services in the region. This move is in line with the Province of British Columbia's set targets of reducing bus emissions by 40% by 2030 and 60% by 2040. BC Transit has secured funding for the acquisition of 141 electric buses, including heavy duty, double decker, and light duty models. Additionally, the company is acquiring 80 diesel double decker vehicles to cater to immediate local demands and will continue to use Hydrogenated Derived Renewable Diesel as a low-emission fuel source. Furthermore, BC Transit plans to purchase 105 heavy duty hybrid buses and light duty petrol buses to support handyDART services. This comprehensive strategy not only focuses on sustainability and emission reduction but also addresses the pressing need for enhanced public transport services in the area by incorporating a variety of eco-friendly technologies.
