Britain Leads the Way in Zero Emission Bus Market Expansion
Key Ideas
  • The UK saw a significant increase in zero-emission buses, with 1,570 electric or hydrogen units added in 2024.
  • The country's expanding bus fleet, supported by government funding, reflects growing confidence in zero-emission technologies.
  • Registrations of minibuses doubled, while single and double-decker bus deliveries also saw substantial growth.
  • England led the way in vehicle deliveries, accounting for the majority of the new zero-emission buses in the UK.
In 2024, the UK solidified its role in the zero-emission bus market, with 1,570 electric or hydrogen units entering service, marking a 35.5% increase from the previous year. This growth was fueled by increased model availability, with operators having 17 different options to choose from, especially in single and double decker buses. The rollout of the Zero Emission Bus Regional Area (ZEBRA) scheme further accelerated the country's bus fleet expansion, with more deliveries expected in the coming year. The total of 8,390 buses joining Britain's roads in 2024 made it the largest European bus market, reflecting operator confidence and government support for zero-emission technologies. Registrations rose in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with significant increases in all segments, including minibuses, single and double-decker buses. Despite a drop in Scotland, England dominated with the highest share of vehicle deliveries. Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, praised the growth and government funding's role in achieving net zero goals and enhancing public transport sustainability. The positive trend in the UK's zero-emission bus market aligns with efforts to improve air quality and support sustainable public transport nationwide.
