Cummins has initiated the production of hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2-ICE) for Tata Motors at a new facility in Jamshedpur, India. The newly introduced B6.7H hydrogen engines, which share components with existing diesel and natural gas engines, are tailored to be easily refueled and installed in Tata Motors' trucks. This venture between Tata Motors and Cummins aims to drive the decarbonization of India's commercial vehicle industry by offering a practical zero-carbon power solution. The joint venture in India focuses not only on hydrogen engines but also on other low-to-zero emissions technologies such as batteries and fuel cells. This collaboration, spanning over three decades, has recently established TCPL GES, a subsidiary dedicated to developing eco-friendly propulsion technologies for commercial vehicles. Ashwath Ram, managing director of Cummins Group in India, emphasizes the importance of bringing advanced emission-reducing technologies to the market. The partnership between Cummins and Tata Motors aligns with Cummins' Planet 2050 strategy, striving for zero emissions by 2050. The Indian commercial vehicle industry has seen significant progress in electrification, especially in city bus transportation and last-mile delivery, with a notable increase in commercial EV sales.
