The Government of India has taken a significant step towards promoting green hydrogen by sanctioning five pilot projects for hydrogen-powered buses and trucks under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. These projects will see the deployment of 37 hydrogen-powered vehicles across 10 major routes, with the government providing ₹208 crore in funding support. Launched on 4th January 2023 by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to establish India as a global hub for green hydrogen production, usage, and export. With a budget outlay of ₹19,744 crore for the period of 2023-2030, the mission focuses on decarbonization, clean energy adoption, and reducing fossil fuel dependency. Key features of the mission include creating demand for green hydrogen in key industries, offering financial incentives for electrolyser manufacturing, developing green hydrogen hubs, providing policy support, infrastructure development, research & development initiatives, skill development programs, and fostering international cooperation for technology transfer and exports. The mission's objectives encompass reducing carbon emissions, cutting fossil fuel imports, promoting a transition to clean energy, fostering self-reliance under 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat', and positioning India as a leader in green hydrogen technology and markets. Through a comprehensive approach that integrates various aspects of technology, policy, infrastructure, and international collaboration, the National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to drive India towards a sustainable and greener future.
