Key Ideas
- National Green Hydrogen Mission focuses on implementing pilot projects to replace fossil fuels in transport with green hydrogen.
- Scheme for Transport Sector aims to support deployment of green hydrogen in buses and trucks, evaluating economic viability, and ensuring safe operations.
- Financial assistance provided to reduce viability gap for hydrogen fuel vehicles and infrastructure costs, excluding hydrogen production expenses.

In January 2023, India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission to promote green hydrogen in the transportation sector. The mission includes implementing pilot projects to replace fossil fuels with green hydrogen and its derivatives, focusing on addressing operational issues, technology readiness, regulations, and infrastructure. The Scheme for Transport Sector was notified in February 2024 with a budgetary outlay of INR 496 crore until FY 2025-2026. This scheme supports the deployment of green hydrogen in buses and trucks, evaluates economic viability, and ensures safe operations of hydrogen fueling stations. Financial assistance is provided to reduce the viability gap for hydrogen fuel vehicles and infrastructure costs. The monitoring and implementation of the scheme are overseen by a steering committee and Project Appraisal Committee. An implementing agency is responsible for monitoring the progress of pilot projects. The projects are expected to be completed within 24 months from the date of award, with possible extensions.
