The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in India has kickstarted five pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission to deploy hydrogen-powered buses and trucks. These projects will involve a total of 37 vehicles, with 15 being hydrogen fuel cell-based and 22 hydrogen internal combustion engine-based. Additionally, nine hydrogen refueling stations will be set up and tested on ten specified routes across the country. Some of the designated routes include Greater Noida–Delhi–Agra, Bhubaneswar–Konark–Puri, and Pune–Mumbai, among others. The projects have been awarded to major Indian companies such as TATA Motors Ltd, Reliance Industries Limited, Ashok Leyland, and NTPC. Furthermore, the government has allocated a budget of Rs 208 crore to support these initiatives, with an expected timeline for completion within the next 18 to 24 months. The primary goal of these pilot projects is to facilitate the development of commercially viable hydrogen-based technologies in the transportation sector, specifically focusing on buses and trucks. This endeavor includes testing the technical performance of the vehicles, assessing their feasibility in real-world conditions, and evaluating their economic viability. The creation of essential infrastructure like hydrogen refueling stations is also a key aspect of these projects. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized the importance of these initiatives on social media, highlighting that they will pave the way for future large-scale adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles.
