U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen recently visited the Island Transit facility in Whidbey to discuss the organization's future plans, particularly the transition to a zero-emission fleet. Additionally, $7.53 million was allocated for the construction of a new transit center on South Whidbey, while expansions are underway at the Coupeville operating base. The organization is also considering hydrogen as a potential alternative after encountering challenges with electric vans. Solar panels will be installed to address power outages on the island. Island Transit is actively involved in discussions about establishing a regional clean hydrogen hub in Bellingham. The timeline for implementing the hydrogen-powered fleet and the new transit center is pending on securing a viable fuel source and concluding negotiations with the property owner, respectively.
