In April 2022, Kerala introduced India's first hydrogen-powered cars, prominently featuring the Toyota Mirai model. This step positioned Kerala as a leading state in India allowing the registration of such vehicles. The Toyota Mirai operates on hydrogen fuel cells that chemically react hydrogen with oxygen to generate electrical power, producing only water as exhaust. With a unique power train system, the Toyota Mirai boasts quick five-minute refueling times and a range of up to 600 km. Kerala's green hydrogen mission involves establishing hydrogen fuelling stations, with various agencies like TCC, IOCL, and CIAL participating in the initiative. The state aims to shift towards green fuels, with plans to transition buses to electric and hydrogen-powered ones to reduce carbon emissions. Despite initial misconceptions about the technology, Kerala's innovation in hydrogen-powered vehicles is steering the state towards a sustainable future. This move not only signifies a significant leap in India's green vehicle revolution but also sets an example for other regions to explore hydrogen as a clean and efficient energy source for transportation.
