The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada is initiating the Maryland Parkway Bus Rapid Transit project in Las Vegas, a transformative initiative set to enhance transportation along a 12.5-mile corridor. With a budget of $250 million, the project addresses the need for improved accessibility, safety, and comfort for the significant number of vehicles and transit riders utilizing the corridor daily. The project, led by GCW Engineering Inc., includes redesigning the road to feature shared bus and bicycle lanes, adding transit shelters and platforms, widening sidewalks, upgrading pedestrian crossings, and implementing priority signals for buses. The goal is to create a more efficient and pleasant commuting experience while fostering economic development and community cohesion in the region. Notably, the project will introduce hydrogen fuel cell electric buses to the corridor, offering a faster and environmentally friendly transportation option. The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has granted $149.9 million to support this sustainable approach. U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has lauded the initiative for its potential to deliver a cleaner and better commute for the area's residents and workforce. Expected to conclude by 2026, the project is poised to significantly improve transportation infrastructure in Las Vegas and contribute to a more sustainable and interconnected urban environment.
